VH1's Top 40 Metal Songs

In the spirit of the Metal Month on VH1, they aired a four-part series on the 40 greatest Metal Songs ever. Hosted by Sebastian Bach of Skid Row this was always going to be a list of some of the awesomestly bad and kick-ass tunes to have ever graced this planet! Well here is the list counting down.

40. "Breaking the Law" - Judas Priest
39. "I'm Eighteen" - Alice Cooper
38. "Balls to the Wall" - Accept
37. "Smoke on the Water" - Deep Purple
36. "Wait and Bleed" - Slipknot
35. "Metal Health" - Quiet Riot
34. "Paranoid" - Black Sabbath
33. "High 'N' Dry " - Def Leppard
32. "Thunder Kiss '65" - White Zombie
31. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" - Scorpions
30. "Epic" - Faith No More
29. "Caught in a Mosh" - Anthrax
28. "The Beautiful People" - Marilyn Manson
27. "Run to the Hills" - Iron Maiden
26. "Refuse/Resist" - Sepultura
25. "Cowboys From Hell" - Pantera
24. "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" - AC/DC
23. "Freak on a Leash" - Korn
22. "Enter Sandman" - Metallica
21. "Paradise City" - Guns 'N' Roses
20. "I Wanna Rock" - Twisted Sister
19. "Man in the Box" - Alice in Chains
18. "Slave to the Grind" - Skid Row
17. "Live Wire" - Motley Crue
16. "Walk" - Pantera
15. "Bulls on Parade" - Rage Against the Machine
14. "Toxicity" - System of a Down
13. "Rainbow in the Dark" - Dio
12. "Bring tha Noize" - Anthrax & Public Enemy
11. "Peace Sells" - Megadeth
10. "Ace of Spades" - Motorhead
9. "Crazy Train" - Ozzy Osbourne
8. "Raining Blood" - Slayer
7. "The Number of the Beast" - Iron Maiden
6. "Detroit Rock City" - KISS
5. "You've Got Another Thing Coming" - Judas Priest
4. "Back in Black" - AC/DC
3. "Master of Puppets" - Metallica
2. "Welcome to the Jungle" - Guns 'N' Roses
1. "Iron Man" - Black Sabbath

As with any list such as this there will be problems and disagreements. Naturally, we all don't share the same consensus otherwise the world would be listenin to heavy metal and not fuckin pop! For instance taking into account the fact that Deep Purple are considered to be THE forefathers of heavy metal it is a shame to see their tune "Smoke on the Water" so low in the list. It is one of my favourite songs of all time as well and I was saddened to see it appear so soon. Likewise, what the fuck is up with "Paranoid"??! That was supposed to have started the whole British Heavy Metal scene and not "Iron Man"! Frankly, I feel the compilers screwed this one up pretty bad. It should have been switched around a bit.

Not only that did I find a bit irritating, but also the fact that G'n'R was able to notch up two songs in the list and one of them at number two while my main man Dio only had one; and that was also from his band DIO. Personally, they missed some kick ass songs from the time when Dio was with Black Sab. Songs like "Sign of the Southern Cross", "Falling off the Edge of the World" in fact most songs from the Dehumanizer and Heaven and Hell, albums could have easily replaced some of the songs on this list. How could you forget THE quintessential voice of metal and the most bad-ass guitarist in metal, (for those who don't know, I'm talking about Dio and Tony Iommi).

And who the fuck are Slipknot?? Such a shame though since I was hoping to find "Hell's Bells" somewhere there but I am glad they atleast put "Dirty Deeds" as that was the song that introduced me to AC/DC. Bon Scott is a bad-ass!! "Back in Black" needs to be in any list I tell you! Good job there. I was kinda surprised to not see any Metallica songs from their S&M album, maybe they weren't metal enough but I certainly think that is what really started the metal mix, I mean you want to acknowledge bands like Slipknot and Korn and can't really put out a song from the album that brought them into mainstream? That's gotta be fucked up royally! And where in good God's name is Led Zep ???!!! DO NOT I repeat DO NOT tell me that they are not a legendary band. If AC/DC can make it there as a hard rock band then surely Led Zep can too. No "Stairway to Heaven" nor "Kashmir" better than any Anthrax and Public Enemy song put together.

Considering the current state of VH1 for them to even compile a list like this is still commendable. Naturally I'm a lil pissed off but in a time and era such as this, one can't complain too much.

Up the Irons! \m/

Everyone has an opinion, and in my humble opinion...It was a travesty that there was no mention of Budgie and their song "Breadfan" from their seminal 1973 album " Never turn your back on a friend" which has been oft-imitated and never equalled.

i agree with you on many of these things, and i also agree with the guy who said that enter sandman shouldve been higher, i also say that system of a down shouldve had something other than toxicity on the top 40, they are an amazing band but i do not think that toxicity was their best song, also, g-n-r doesnt deserve to have welcome to the jungle so high up, they are a good band and that is a great song but there is no way it is better than half the songs on that list

I really dislike lists like these. These are not the best metal songs. They are the most popular. I could name many bands who have songs which are better.

This list alright, but y have bands like Slipknot? How About Zeppelin and even Van Halen, who founded Metal? They should have more Megadeth songs too, like Hangar 18 or Holy Wars. This is a great site, keep it up!!

whoever thinks that enter sandman is better then master of puppets is complety unaware of what metal is. That's some really dumb shit to say. Really really stupid!

I think half of the songs on the list shouldn't be there 'cause there are a lot better songs out there. For example, Never Surrender by Triumph, Painkiller by Judas Priest, Over The Mountain by Ozzy, Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath, and I think Antisocial is Anthrax's best song all-around. The songs that should stay (not comprehensive), are Rainbow in the Dark and Rock You Like A Hurricane (I don't have the time right now to complete this list). And Enter Sandman is a good song, but certainly not Metallica's best and shouldn't be on the list. Some songs off Garage Days are better.

I was dissapointed not seein highway to hell, they had back in black and highway to hell is just as good, and some one said enter sandman was biger than master of puppets, no way, im not saying i agree but you cant argue with the fact that that was there biddest hit, i pesonally like fade to black. Oh and the dude that owns this site, if you dont know who slipknot is you should try listening to them, at first i did not like them cuz people were saying they were better than rob zombie, but now i know them, there modern metal style makes you wanna just get up punch the guy to the right, hit the guy on the left with a bat and throw the tv out the window. finally the person who said G N R didnt diserve to be that high on the list. ????what is wrong with you, there first album ever spawned some of the biggest hits in rock history, there was a time that they brought back rock when there really wasnt much rock left, we should thank G N R

Fade to Black isn't just the greatest metal song of all time, its arguably in my opinion one of if not the greatest ever made...laughable that it isn't on here...in my darkest hour by Megadeth is the only metal song with nearly as much feeling and that aint on this list either....joke

My biggest problem with this, and any "metal" lists on VH1 is their definition of "metal".

I'm 37. I grew up in the 80's and 90's, listenting to metal. I hung out with other metal dudes, and went to metal shows. VH1's biggest problem is that they can't figure out what metal is and was.

On their list, the following songs ARE NOT METAL, at best, they are hard rock. Alice Cooper, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Twisted Sister,
Motley Crue, KISS, Guns & Roses

See, problem is, I think VH1 is full of old foggies. They can't tell the difference between METAL and hard rock. At least Sirius gets it right. Seriously. I think VH1 only threw in some metal bands and picked a random song by them. And not all greatest hits lists need to be full of 10+ year old songs. I'd put in more Slipknot or Killswitch Engage.

Bands missing that should be in there:

Machine Head
Godsmack
Exodus
Disturbed
Fear Factory
Flotsam and Jetsam
Hatebreed
Lamb of God
Killswtich Engage
Shadows Fall
Mudvayne
Overkill!!!!!

And Mr. Malick, you seriously need to listen to more metal before you start saying, "Who is Slipknot". Uh, they're probably one of the BIGGEST and most popular metal bands right now. Seriously, what ROCK have you been under? Oh wait, I answered that question in the question, you've been under ROCK, not metal.

VH1 blows. Fuse would put together a better top40 list.

Okay, first off, the only amazing metal songs aren't necessarily the old ones. There are more modern metal songs that I would listen over older ones. I think System of a Down should be lower down the list while Slipknot should be a little higher, and maybe other bands like Disturbed, A7X, and Godsmack should be on there too, but that's just me. And by the way, you cannot host a website dedicated to rock and say something like who the fuck is Slipknot, one of the milestone bands in today's mainstream metal.

1. i completely agree about the "Paranoid" thing. especially since its behind Marilyn Manson?! come on. lets be realistic..
2. "Welcome to the Jungle" as the #2 greatest metal song of all time? i like GnR, but hell, "Welcome to the Jungle" should not have been the #2.
3. chill w the Slipknot hating. Korn sucks, but hey, nothin wrong w Slipknot.
4. COMPLETELY agree w the AC/DC part. no "Hells Bells"? and i have no problem w "Deeds", but no way should that make it over "Bells"
5. Metallica kicks ass.
6. i love Zeppelin, and i think "Achilles last Stand" should be on there.
7. as for the shit stain who said "Enter Sandman" is better than "Master of Puppets"? go play in traffic. dumb fuck.
8. i agree w the cat who said "Hangar 18" by Megadeth. maybe even a little "Symphony"?
9. whoever said songs from Metallica's album Garage, Inc., youre a dumbass. all those songs are covers. dipshit.
10. dude that likes "Fade to Black": i LOVE that song. kicks ass. but it says METAL. not ballads..
11. DJCyRo: holy freakin shit dawg. i COMPLETLY agree with that paragraph on Slipknot.

hey man, dont you talk about Slipknot like that.

they are probably the second greatest nu-metal band of all time (right next to Korn, of course)

you website is sweet, and i agree that some of the choices were ridiculous.

GUNS/roses are not metal. they are a freakin pretty boy band from the eighties that only released two albums before they crashed. they dont deserve to be on the top 40.

Sun Jun 15, 01:07:00 PM PDT
Anonymous Anonymous said...

oh, and please people, i know that Led zepp, van halen and all those guys started the metal movement, but you have to remeber that that was thirty years ago.

the music has changed alot, and while i respect the classics, they are no longer considered metal.

led zep, van halen, they are HARD ROCK. not metal.

bands like motly crue, and other eigties bands, are no longer considered "metal"

in the eighties they were metal, but that form of music is dead. today, classic rock is all well and good, but it needs to make way for Godsmack, slipknot, korn, Marilyn manson, metallica, Nine inch Nails, and others.

i also agree, "freak on a leash" was not korns best song. you wann hear some agrresive korn? listen to "right now" (the unedited version) "falling away from me" and "somebody someone"

dude, how the hell can you not know who slipknot is?
they got the thumbs up from the Oz-man himself, and if ozzy likes it, you know its the real deal.

finally, people, we will never be avble to agree on what should have been on the top forty. and just because they made it to the top forty doesnt mean that there are no songs better then them. you haver to realize that, you can never prove an opinion.

good website, do a little research and find out about todays music next time.

hey man, the fore fathers were all well and good, but just because they started the movement doesnt make them metal

i mean, come on?

what the hell is guns and roses doin there man???

they were a pretty boy band that released two albums before they crashed.

they shouldn be anywhere near a metal playlist

The best metal bands today ARE NOT the ones being played on the radio (godsmack, slipknot, korn, disturbed, etc). Try looking into REAL METAL- TOOL, Mastodon, Opeth, Dream Theater, and Dragonforce would be the better known of the "underground" scene. Just because the songs are catchy and the band members are willing to suck dick for publicity does not make them a good band.

welcome to the jungle should not be that high, i never considered gnr even metal, they are just hard rock, but there are a alot of songs on there that is not metal. they should of had battery from metallica on there also.

Well, I gotta say, you had some good points, but I think VH1 did a rather DECENT job with this. As for "Bring The Noise" ranking higher than Toxicity and Enter Sandman, well thats another story. I personally say:

4. Welcome To The Jungle
3. Back In Black
2. Iron Man
1. Master Of Puppets

And Toxicity is better than any shitty Motorhead song, so Toxicity around the 10/11 spot. I guess VH1 did an alright job with this list. Some mistakes, as always, but what is there to do about it?

ok so no lie, i think iron man is a little over rated. but i have to say not bad list, but i do agree that some of it is hard rock and heavy metal. well defined to this day and age, but years ago acdc and alice cooper were considered heavy metal. now and days we have alot of fucked up people who could have scared the living shit out of people years back in the 70's and 80's..with all that said i deffinatly think Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheep should be off that list...honestly thunder struck and hells bells were far better...and i could go on..but i think we all agree that this is not a heavy metal list, but Classic and Hard Rock..and then they should make a new Metal top 40 count fuck..oh and what about Heavy Metal By Sammy Hagar...thats should be on there...the hard rock top 40 shit..

Wed Nov 26, 11:30:00 PM PST

ok ac/dc is not metal in my opinion, i deffinetly think there should have been some disturbd, and a lot of those songs i think are not in the metal catagory, maybe hard rock or classic rock at the most.

they say top 40 metal songs, ok, but how can they do such thing? You can rate them based on the following:

-how much metal they are.
-how classical they are.
-how good they are.
-how much people like them.

we all know there are lots of metal sub-genders: heavy, thrash, crossover, glam, black, death, etc. in which there are really nice songs. Now, will you put "Kinslayer" on such list or "Bed of Razors" (I hope you know such songs)? They are really good songs but can't compete with a 4 tones "Paranoid" song.

I know it's a classical song and it's really good but I bet there are some master pieces that are far better.

One thing I noticed, since it's VH1, to make the list a song had to have a video, I think thats why many songe that shoudl be in a top 40 list were not. For example, I was/am a big maetallica fan and personally could easily name 10 songs of their that should be in a "top metal song" list ahead of enter sandman, but they had a video for that one. I mean what true "metal" fan would have put enter sandman above Trapped under ice, Creeping death, or Sanitarium. Same for Judas Priest, yes You've got another thing coming is a great song, but I woudl think songs like Sentinal or Screaming for vengeance woudl make a top metal list before it would. JMHO

ok, listen all u fuckerheads who are complaining(for stupid reasons), these songs are not the new era metal that we headbang to now, they are the 80'S METAL, they friggin brought metal into this damn world. Those songs were hard enough back then to where they were considered metal, now there's new bands who are even harder than the old ones, but the old ones are the ones to thank for us even having metal.....so yeah, there's gonna be a lot of disagreements about where songs are gonna be on the list, or even off of it...duh, i have my own. Like...Iron man is a friggin awesome song, and i love it and all, but even back then that was never a extremely hard rock song. Welcome to the jungle was pretty hard then....plus there's a video for it, so thats why its #2. I agree with lotsa the ppl who said slipknot shouldn't even be on the fuckin list in the first place...yeah Van Halen should have some songs on here, and more of Kiss. Master of puppets is way heavier than Iron man...rainbow in the dark

so if ur one of the ppl whos leaving comments on this who likes all of this new shit and dosn't prolly even know half the songs on this list, screw u....

AND BY THE FUCKIN WAY, GNR IS NOT A PRETTY BOY BAND, HAVE U NOTICED THAT THEY HAVE 2 SONGS ON THIS LIST AND THAT THEY BLEW WAY HIGH ON THE CHARTS WHEN THEY GOT OUT APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION??? AND THEY HAD , LIKE 4, ALBUMS, NOT 2 U SHITHEADS!!!

The problem with this list is that back in the 80s and 90s, the idiots that made this list still didn't know what metal was. They thought Twisted Sister was metal, when really, Anthrax was. There was glam rock, and there was METAL! Metal bands of the 80s and 90s were Priest, Slayer, Megadeth, Testament, Iron Maiden were.

This list is pretty much a joke!

where is the motley crue songs? they have every band that copied off of motley crue's style of music (such as G N'R and skid row) the crue was around way before them. this list sucks. iron man at no. 1? Bull****

Alright, i have a lot to say about this list. theres alot of good and bad, but mostly bad.

Judas Priest shold be ranked higher (for breaking the law), so painkiller should also be on here.

I cant believe someone could not have heard of Slipknot by now. The facemasked maniacs deserve some credit for being the kings of the nu metal scene today. And if wait and bleed got on here, so should before i forget, their best song.

I dont understand how paranoid got so far back, its the original album that started metal, so paranoid deserves much more credit.

def leppard is not metal!

white/rob zombie sucks, theres no way they deserve to be on this list.

faith no more isnt metal either

anthrax has a few better songs, like madhouse that should replace 'bring tha noize'. whatever idiots put that down need a life.

marilyn manson sucks, he tries to be like alice cooper, and fails. all his music sucks.

im glad iron maiden got their hits on here. im not being greedy, but maybe the trooper on here as well?

Im glad accept in sepultura are on here, i thought everyone else forgot about them.

ac/dc has better songs like highway to hell, tnt, etc.

korn sucks.

for all the metalheads who say master of puppets is far better than sandman, ur rite. but dont rant so hard on the black album stuff. enter sandman is a great song, but that shows how good master of puppets is. all im saying is sandman and black album should get some praise for being the topselling album and song for the band. i may have a bias since theyre my favorite band, but still.

whoever hates GNR, SCREW YOU!

alice in chains is great, but theyre more grunge than metal.

skid row has better songs, and shouldnt be on the list, but sebastian bach was the host, so there had to be a song by them.

motley crue has better songs, and more shold be on this list!

if bulls on parade is on here, so should be killing in the name.

SOAD has better songs like BYOB and chop suey that should also be on here.

Comments on every song: Part 1

40: "Breaking the Law" - Judas Priest

I love Judas Priest and I give them props for being one of the earlier metal bands. They deserve to be on this list.

39: "I'm Eighteen" - Alice Cooper

Great song and Great band but they're not really heavy enough to be considered metal.

38: "Balls to the Wall" - Accept

One of the great protest songs of the eighties. Its a good song but im not sure if its list-worthy.

37: "Smoke on the Water" - Deep Purple

Almost all metal can trace back to Deep Purple. The forefathers of metal deserve to be on this list.

36: "Wait and Bleed" - Slipknot

Slipknot is currently one of the leaders of nu-metal and they defenently deserve to be on this list, but with "Before I Forget" instead.

35: "Metal Health" - Quiet Riot

One of the best pop metal songs out there. but im not a pop metal fan.

34: "Paranoid" - Black Sabbath

If "Iron Man" and "Paranoid were switched this list would be that much better. Go Ozzy!

33: "High 'N' Dry " - Def Leppard

Again pop metal. Its good but not list-worthy.

32: "Thunder Kiss '65" - White Zombie

Meh, its ok but not list-worthy.

31: "Rock You Like a Hurricane" - Scorpions

More pop metal. Agh!

Well those are the first ten. Ill add the next ten whenever i feel like it. \m/

anyone whose mad about Slipknot being on the list shouldn't be. They were revolutionary when their self titled came out and they introduced this aggressive angry mood that no one else had ever done before. Plus their music was not the false dishonest bullshit people had already put out. They sang what they wanted, their lyrics didn't lie, and made their music sound absolutely incredible. Wait & Bleed is a all time metal classic, and if nobody can see that then you're either someone who thinks one genre of metal is the classics and nothing from any other genre is. Or you're a poser who thinks they know metal just cause the have heard of deep purple, metallica, black sabbath, iron maiden, ac/dc, and all of the other old stuff that everyone usually remembers best. Branch out your interests in different metal genres each one has at least one good band.Oh and Slipknot isn't Nu-Metal, they're not any one genre, they are a mix of alternative, trash, rap, death metal, even metalcore if ya listen enough, and their are some melodic songs like Circle on Vol. 3 The Subliminal Verses, and Snuff on All Hope Is Gone that do have that Nu-Metal Stone Sour (Corey's 2nd band) feel to it. But most of their work is raw insane madness. Oh and to the gigantic dumbass who said "who the fuck is Slipknot?" You seem like a huge metal wannabe, if you don't know who they are stop being a poser and don't post idiotic shit like that. Oh and everyone else who said Slipknot and Lamb Of God should have more spots on the list give yourself a pat on the back. Only thing with Slipknot is most of their most iconic songs would have to be censored like crazy ie. Spit It Out, People = Shit, Surfacing, Disasterpeice, Eyeless, all littered with cursing.

Oh and everyone else is like where the hell is zep then ur also retarded because zep isn't metal they are hard rock!!!! Oh and even though I hate disturbed they are a very good metal band. I don't like the music they produce but I respect them that they are very talented!!! But I think slipknot shouldve been in the low 20's instead of the high 30's. Very good list except for the bottom! I was into it until iron man! WTF is that!!! I love sabbath but ugh!!!!! Metallica rocks and they were perfect on the list! But there's nothing I can do about it, stay (sic)

i agree that slipknot is a good metal band but IMHO they havent revolutionized anything like the likes of maiden, metallica or sabbath, and i agree that GNR shouldnt be #2 if anything MoP should be higher,
def more megadeth, gotta have some Megadeth. Dont forget tho the guys who make this page are trying to get ratings, paid etc etc

its like ozzy said a few years back the people who induct bands into the rock and roll hall of fame dont know jack squat, or like when Jethro Tull beat Metallica for the heaviest rock album in 1989 or whatever and Ozzy was fuckin pissed.

nice site. since we get the right to say our opinions, im going to leave mine and hopefully i will not offend anyone. so here's the deal: this list has good metal songs but most bands hsouldnt be there because they are not metal bands such as alice cooper, guns n' roses, acdc, motorhead, motley crue (unless you speak for their hair metal side), kiss, rage against the machine, alice in chains, deff leppard, faith no more and (here comes the controverse one) korn, because i dont consider nu metal a real form of heavy metal, why not name it best rock songs, since most of the songs arent from metal bands and aren't metal songs either? so much better metal bands and they had to put only the most popular. even gothic metal could overcome most of the hard rock bands in this list and gothic metal isnt that good

To solve the arguments most people are having, including, the host of the site, is that Vh1 shouldn't have compiled these songs into one countdown. They should have divided it into periods of time. If they made a countdowns divided by decades almost everyone would be satisfied. Slipknot, Disturbed, A7X's early works would be in the 00's. Korn and Metallica 90's. I'm not going to list any others because some of the bands were big for more than a decade.

First off, I'd like to say hop off Slipknot's nuts. "Wait and Bleed" isn't my favorite song, but Slipknot basically pioneered the nu-metal foundation. I do agree that anything after Iowa sucks, but its still Slipknot. Secondly, I agree about the older bands being on the list. They're classic/hard rock, not metal. As good as they are, stop kidding yourself. I would have loved to seen "Hot for Teacher" by Van Halen on the list. Also, "Toxicity" as number 14? Hell no. I would have went with "Sugar", since its a lot heavier. I fucking hate that I have to ask, but where's Cannibal Corpse or Death or even fucking Anvil? The first two were fucking death metal GODS. At least throw "Hammer Smashed Face" on the list, since its about one of the most brutal songs around today. And as for the G'n'R dabate, fuck Axl Rose. I'm down with Slash, since he was and still is a kickass guitarist. But having that band on the list just doesn't make sense. I'm glad they did homage Pantera, seeing as how I'm a huge Pantera fan. DIMEBAG FOREVER, getcha' pull. A couple of bands I'd have liked to seen added would be Lamb of God, Black Label Society, King Diamond, Mastadon, Dethklok, Rammstein, and at least "When Worlds Collide" by Powerman 5000. On an end note, Korn is a damn good metal band, nu-metal or not. I'm just glad this list got all of the Big Four. I'd give this list about a 6.5/10.

Anthrax is good but bring the noise don't really belong there in my opinion. They more Megadeth like the song "holy wars". i can go on and on over this list...

First off, I would like to agree with all those people who are defending Slipknot on here, and they really are worthy of this list, maybe with Before I Forget instead though.

All of you saying AC/DC and Led Zep don't belong on here need to shut the fuck up. They contributed more to Metal music than any actual "metal" band ever has. (not including Metallica and Maiden)

Guns 'n Roses are great, but I wouldnt say they should be that high, maybe somewhere between 10 and 5.

Korn's okay, but not deserving of this list. Same with Marilyn Manson.

Instead of Toxicity by System of a Down up there, put B.Y.O.B.

Switch Iron Man with Paranoid.

Take out all of the Glam Metal bands. (Def Leppard, Twisted Sister, blah blah...)Replace them with The Trooper, Hanger 18, Painkiller, One, and maybe more by the wonderful creators of those songs.

Holy Diver by Dio needs to be on that list.

Faith No More isn't Metal.

Motorhead should be lower, but still on the list.

If your going to have Anthrax, at least make it a good Anthrax song, and not a collaberation with Hip Hop.

Maybe take out Alice in Chains. They are amazing, but they are more of a grunge band. But if you're going to keep Alice in Chains, at least throw on some Soundgarden too.

Cemetary Gates instead of Walk for Pantera.

Where the fuck is TOOL??? They are probably the greatest metal band of modern music. Throw on Lateralus or Jambi.

Maybe a song by Lamb of God too...

After you've done all those things this list would be much better in my opinion. But, overall the list is not bad, especially considering Metal is a flexible genre and it has tons of subgenres.

This is a deadass list. VH1 has the list from overexposed bands to bands that worth mentioning to bands that are not even worth mentioning. The thing that I don't get is: Why does VH1 often think that Guns N' Roses, Twisted Sister, The Scoprions, Skid Row, and Motley Crue are metal? They're not even metal. Well, they are, but it's "glam metal", or commonly referred to pop metal. But that would be considered hard rock, not heavy metal. VH1 needs to get their fucking eyes checked, because why would you put glam bands on here?
Another thing is: Slipknot, System of a Down, Faith No More and Marylin Manson on here? I don't get that. Who fucking cares if they sold the most albums and whatnot. VH1 insist on that motto: "If they sold the most, then they can be on this list". Emo and goth have no right on being on this list. Theo only way that emo can be considered metal, if you have an Powerviolence and or Thrashcore in your particular style of playing. Powerviolence and Thrashcore go into Grindcore. Early Grindcore/grindgore go into death metal. That is the only fucking way, that I will consider them; even metal.
Where's death metal, black metal, progressive metal, crossover thrash, doom metal, speed metal, power metal, groove metal, and viking metal? They need those to get into a list - a good list. If they put on rap metal and glam metal, then I would put in "So What" by Miles Davis. It's a good song, however, but where's the real metal? VH1 fucked it up, like usual. I don't know why, but they always fuck it up.
I would put in: Bathory, Death, Tool, Venom, Carcass, Voviod, Carnivore, Flotsam and Jetsam, Necrophagist, Sodom, Behold..The Arctopus (instrumental progressive metal band), Cynic, Atheist, Evildead, Gorguts, Suicidal Tendencies, Autopsy, Burzum, Dream Theater, Mercyful Fate, and Opeth. I swear to God, there's not even a small amount of "metal" on this list. They also put the metal songs, well-the classic metal songs up more and the newer bands down. That makes no logical sense, VH1.
But I will put one credit in there, at least they put in Rage Against the Machine and Sepultura, and who could forget: Slayer? But they put an overrated Slayer song, they could've put in: either "Chemical Warfare" or "Black Magic".
